Marvin Winkler – Software

About me

I’m Marvin, an IT consultant with over 14 years of experience. Most of my work has been in finance, payments and insurance. I help teams build and run infrastructure and software, using automation to keep routine manual work to a minimum. Security and compliance are part of that from the start.

A major milestone for me came in 2017–2018, when I designed and built a payment processor’s infrastructure and took it through successful PCI DSS certification. It combined container-based services with a scalable, resilient architecture across two data centres, automated provisioning and security hardening. The security design also included network segmentation, encrypted log transmission and monitoring of security events.

I’ve worked extensively with containers since 2014, in Docker’s early days. I use them in all my projects and particularly value the consistent way they let me package, deploy and run software. In 2015, I successfully migrated a company’s entire infrastructure from a traditional Linux setup to a fully containerised environment. I publish my own open-source container projects under ServerContainers and DesktopContainers.

Full-stack development has been the main focus of my work since 2018. I’ve built a range of applications from backend to frontend, working both independently and in close collaboration with UX designers and other team members.
I aim to build products that handle complex tasks and remain intuitive to use, ideally without a manual.

I combine consulting with hands-on work on cloud, infrastructure and architecture, both within teams and across projects. I improve existing applications, infrastructure and development workflows so they work together as a coherent system, from development environments and CI/CD through staging to production.

I share personal projects and technical experiments on marvin.im.
